PURPOSE
This policy outlines the Leaders Institute (LI) approach to Work-integrated Learning (WIL).
PRINCIPLES
WIL is a compulsory and assessable element of some LI courses, whereby students undertake approved learning in a work context with an employer and without remuneration. This includes professional and vocational placement, as well as online or virtual WIL. LI will ensure that WIL:
· opportunities remain the responsibility of LI;
· adheres to relevant government legislation and is consistent with Fair Work Australia requirements;
· requirements are outlined clearly in unit documentation and handbooks;
· benefits students’ career development and professional networking;
· is equitable in outcomes and effectiveness across all WIL placement sites;
· students maintain regular communication and engagement with other students and the relevant qualified LI supervisor;
· meets the unit outcomes and develops LI’s Graduate Attributes;
· units are designed and delivered with respect to disciplinary and industry requirements;
· engages with industry to sustain the relevance of curricula, academic staff currency of practice, and brand reputation;
· partner organisations have appropriate facilities and infrastructure for the placement;
· meets security, ethical and legal requirements regarding wellbeing and safety of students, academic staff, host employers, and the public;
· placements support diversity and equity considerations.
WITHDRAWAL OF PLACEMENT
LI may withdraw a student from a WIL placement if, at any time, the student has: breached the LI Code of Conduct, a relevant professional code or occupational safety code; has disrupted the WIL program; or has been exposed to danger or other inappropriate situation at the workplace.
INSURANCE
LI holds Public Liability Protection and Professional Indemnity which provides cover for the legal liability to pay damages or compensation in respect of personal injury and/or damage to property occurring during WIL placements. The student must also provide proof that their WIL placement organisation has an appropriate level of insurance cover.

Procedures
APPLICATION
Students apply for a WIL placement using the documentation provided in the relevant unit. The placement will only become formal when the completed documents have been submitted to and approved by the Program Director.
INSURANCE CLAIMS
To make a claim under LI’s insurance, the student should contact LI (admin@leadersnew.naviwork.xyz) as soon as possible after the relevant event.
GRIEVANCES
In the case of a complaint or grievance, the WIL student may undertake the grievance processes outlined in the Student Grievance and Appeals Policy.
CRITICAL INCIDENTS
If a critical incident occurs during a WIL placement, LI will adhere to the Critical Incident Management Policy.
